Can you track sleep without an Apple Watch?

Updated 2026-10-14 · 2 min read
Short answer

Apple's Health page describes sleep tracking and the sleep score as Apple Watch features, and does not say an iPhone alone records sleep (checked 2026-10-13). Without a watch you can use another sleep source that writes to Apple Health, a phone-based sleep app, or a simple note, and Daylumen reads whichever you have.

Short answer: Apple's own sleep scoring is built around Apple Watch. If you do not wear one, you still have choices. Here is how they fit together.

What Apple says

On its Health page Apple says that Apple Watch tracks sleep and gives a daily sleep score based on factors such as duration, bedtime consistency and time in each stage. On iPhone you set up a sleep schedule in the Health app, and Apple Watch can then send Wind Down reminders and turn on the Sleep Focus. We did not find a statement on that page that an iPhone alone records how long you slept, so do not assume it does. Source: apple.com/ios/health, checked 2026-10-13.

Your options without a watch

  • Another sleep source that writes to Apple Health. A third-party watch, band, ring or bedside device with its own app can write sleep data into Health, where any app with permission can read it.
  • A sleep app that uses the phone. Some apps estimate sleep from sound or movement near the bed. Quality varies, so read the app's own explanation of how it works.
  • A simple note. If you only want the pattern, a one-tap note of roughly how long you slept is enough to compare nights against each other.

What Daylumen does with sleep

Daylumen does not record sleep itself. It reads sleep entries from Apple Health, whatever the source, and compares them with your usual range. If there is no sleep data for today, the log screen lets you add roughly how many hours you slept. If you have sleep data from a sensor, the manual field does not appear, so the two are not mixed up.

Steps and activity do not need a watch. Those come from the iPhone, so Daylumen can still show how your movement lines up with how you feel.

A fair expectation

Sleep estimated without a sensor on your body is rougher than sleep measured by one. For many people the trend over weeks is still useful, such as whether your bedtime drifts later on busy weeks. Treat single-night numbers with caution, and see a doctor if you are worried about your sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone track sleep by itself?

Apple's Health page describes sleep tracking and the sleep score as Apple Watch features, and the page does not say that an iPhone alone records sleep. Check the Sleep section of your own Health app to see what is being recorded.

Can Daylumen work if I have no sleep data at all?

Yes, but the sleep part will be thin. Daylumen still reads steps and activity, and you can add a rough note of last night's sleep in the log screen.

Which watches or bands work with Daylumen?

Any source that writes sleep data into Apple Health can be read, because Daylumen reads Apple Health rather than a specific device.

Daylumen reads the health data already on your iPhone and tells you what it means for today.
